The ‘Why’ Behind The Ingredients
Almond flour
Almond flour is the base of this no-bake dough for one main reason: You can eat it raw. The almonds used to make almond flour are heat-pasteurized, making it safe to eat. Almond flour is low in carbohydrates, and high in healthy fat, magnesium and Vitamin E. I buy it in bulk at local grocery stores.
Macadamia butter
Macadamia nuts are the most under-rated nut. They are the lowest in carbs and higher in protein, fiber and key nutrients like Vitamin B and manganese compared to other nuts like cashews, almonds and walnuts. I buy all of my macadamia nuts and nut butters from House of Macadamia.
Agave nectar
Agave nectar is low on the glycemic index, meaning it’s a sweetener that won’t spike your blood sugar. I choose dark, amber agave nectar for a rich, caramel flavor. My favorite is this organic amber agave from Madhava.
Protein powder
Protein powder is an easy and effective supplement for anyone looking to bump up their intake. However, not all protein powders are created equal. Read your labels and be highly selective. I’ve been using Ritual protein powder for years because the ingredients are traceable, clean and science-backed. The taste and consistency are perfect for no-bake recipes like my cookie dough balls.
Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate is packed with polyphenols (naturally occurring antioxidants) and helps to reduce inflammation. Choose 70%-90% cacao dark chocolate for the best health benefits and lowest sugar content. I like to support the Endangered Species brand at Whole Foods, or here on Amazon.
